Flowers for Christmas

Nothing moved. Nothing breathed. Yet Spike knew without a doubt she stood in the shadow of the trees, watching him, waiting for him to mess up, to take another life.

He wouldn’t. Tell the truth, he bloody couldn’t. Not anymore. Not since it. Not since her.

Even without the sodding chip in his head, even without his soul, Spike knew his days as a cold-blooded killer were over. She might doubt him; he’d never doubt himself. Not about this. Not about pleasing her.

Spike paid for his bundle of flowers, a Happy Christmas gift for Joyce, and turned to head back through town, knowing exactly when Buffy moved from her spot in the foliage to follow him.

Bleeding Christ, he hated that he loved her. Hated even more that she didn’t believe he loved her.

“I know what you’re doing,” she said, no longer trying to hide from him. “You can buy all the flowers you want, but I’m never gonna love you. I’m never gonna forget what you are, what you’ve done, what you’re capable of doing.”

Spike stopped walking and glanced at her over his shoulder. “Sorry to disappoint you, pet, but the flowers aren’t for you.”

Buffy blinked. “Well, good. Great, even. Glad you finally got the message.”

Was that curiosity in her tone? A bit of jealousy, perhaps?

“Got it, Slayer. Loud and clear.”

Spike barely managed to hide his smirk as Buffy stalked off toward home. He waited long enough to stay clear of her vamp radar then followed her home, leaving the flowers and a short Happy Christmas, Get Well Soon note to Joyce on the front doorstep.

He’d barely made it to the next house before the door opened and Buffy stepped out, her hands shaking as she picked up the flowers and read over his note. He half expected her to throw them out when she recognized them, but she surprised him by calling for her mom and handing Joyce the gift that he’d left for her.

The smile on Joyce’s face might have been thanks enough, but the grateful, happy tears in Buffy’s eyes meant even more. Buffy might pretend to be indifferent to him, but times like this, when she let her guard down just a bit, Spike saw the truth of it. For now, that rare glimpse into her heart, into her, was more than enough.

It was everything.

Merry Christmas, Everyone!

Thank you! Muse has been very difficult as of late so I was pleasantly surprised I managed to knock this one out for today.

Merry Christmas!

Spuffy is passion

Very touching. I love how you portrayed the Slayer. I also think that when she let her guard down, she's the sweetest person. And I love how Spike recognizes it and accepts it as a gift. Merry Christmas!!

hey love by dtissagirl

Aww. It's nice to think he might have given Joyce flowers while she was alive -- Joyce deserved to know of his regard.
